what are some good cell organelle analogies?

i need some examples for a biology project. however, they have to be OBJECTS that i can take to the classroom, so i can’t use stuff like a city/factory/etc.

here are the organelles i need:

mitochondria nucleus chloroplast chromosomes cytoplasm lysosomes rough endoplasmic reticulum cell wall plasma membrane golgi apparatus cytoskeleton vacuole ribosomes

any help would be appreciated, because i just cannot think of anything >.< thanks!

Answer #1

you mean youre making a model out of eac horganelle or making a cell model with the organelles in it? Well here ill do both:

mitochondria : elcair nucleus : basketball/baseball/tennisball/golf ball chloroplast : green beans chromosomes : pipe cleaners cytoplasm : jello lysosomes : peas rough endoplasmic reticulum : pip cleaners cell wall : carboard plasma membrane : jello golgi apparatus : taffy cytoskeleton : cardboard vacuole : water balloon ribosomes : uncrushed pepper corns

Answer #2

actually, i don’t have to make a model. i just have to show and tell the items and say why the item i chose relates to the organelle. for example, a remote control would work for a nucleus because the nucleus controls the functions of the cell.

chromosomes - something like a building plan, or sheet music. The chromosomes contain all your genetic information, the same way that a building plan contains all the information about a building, and a musical score contains all the information about the music

Nucleus - Maybe put the object you choose for the chromosomes in a file or something, as the the nucleus houses the chromosomes. In reality its a bit more complicated than just housing them, but I cant think of an object that will illustrate every aspect of the nucleus.

Lysosomes - Maybe a cleaning product designed to break down fats. Lysosomes are designed to break down worn out cell components, many if which are lipid based.

Vacuole - A balloon? It expands when filled with air, much like when the vacuole fills with fluids. This is important for maintaining tugor pressure. It doesnt address the aspects of the vacuole concerning recycling worn out cell components though.

Plasma membrane - cling wrap. It is flexible and permeable to some extent.

Cell wall/cytosketelton/cytoplasm - An air-tight container. It is rigid like a cell wall, and designed to keep its shape, like the cytoskeleton, though it obviously doesnt have the movement associated with the cytoskeleton. The space inside is like the cytoplasm. Especially if you make jelly inside it! (Or maybe you call it jello - I never know!)

Ribosomes/RER - A saucepan?? They may proteins, and you cook in a saucepan? Sorry, thats the best I can come up with at the moment!

Absolutely no ideas at the moment about the rest, but I think the best thing is to be a bit abstract in your thinking, and find something that fits the organelle the best, rather than finding something which fits every aspect of the organelles function. Hope this is some help to you - this is a really hard project!

thanks so much! this really helped!(: only a few more to figure out…this is what i get for procrastinating -__-
