Do fish tanks have to have a filter at first, and which is better - a filter or water pump?

Answer #1

A filter is necessary, because if you don’t have one the water will become foul. A pump is basically a filter. You pump water out of the tank, through a filter and then back into the tank.

Which is better depends on the size of your fish tank and the kind of fish that you have. A water pump will make a current in the tank. Some fish enjoy swimming against the current. Some will dislike it and hide under the rocks. Best is to ask the salespeople in your zoo shop. Tell them what sort of fish you want to have and how many. They will tell you what size fish tank and what filter mechanism they recommend.

Answer #2

It depends on the fish you get. Betas don’t like either becasue they make their own bubbles in the water to but oxygen in it, but most fish need both to servive.

Answer #3

Betas have both gills and a lung like organ to breath air on the surface. Aeration is not necessary for betas but it certainly doesn’t hurt. Some of the betas I owned liked to play in the bubbles from the airstone which was fun to watch since betas usually don’t swim much.
