How come everytime I go out in public by myself I feel like I'm going to have a panic attack?

I think agoraphobia is when you’re afraid of not getting help ? I usually have it whenever there’s a guy around me . My mom told me it’s probably paranoia or just fear of getting raped ? Idk , my mom doesn’t think it’s that serious so she doesn’t want to send me to a therapist .

I live in NYC so I take the ferry and train alot by myself , and I constantly feel like every guy is staring at me . I’m totally not conceited so I think it’s paranoia . But I always feel like some creep old homeless guy is going to try to talk to me , so whenever I see someone like that coming anywhere near me I start to breathe all fast and stuff . It’s really annoying .

You may have a phobia. If it comes to the point where it hinders your daily life, or you can cause harm to someone or yourself – see a psychiatrist. Phobias can be cured with the right help.

Hi Anna..hope you get over it soon but trust me you need to spend sometime with yourself,see( there is only one corner of the universe you can be certain of improving and that is yourself.) because the origin of stress is in your mind. Without understanding and controlling your own mind it is impossible to eliminate stress and those kind of feelings that you have when you are around people.just spend sometime alone… none of us can exactly feel what you feel if you tell us 1000,000 verses of detail. and at the beggining try to have a good company when you go out and reduce your expectations from others. Never expect anything bad from anybody, but trust me ((Silence, solitude and self-introspection.)) can solve your problem .

I do the same! I feel like I will make a mistake but with other people you have someone to fall back on and laugh about it with!I passed out once from being in public alone!Im not as bad anymore because I made some of my friends bring me to subway and make me order for them while they were in the car across the street! It was sooo hard,but I toughed it out!Now me and public are Tight!!XD

I feel like that too. I am very self conscious, have a low self-esteem, and I just don’t like crowds of strangers… O_o

It’s the normal anxiety that manifests in everyone, just in different ways. Sometimes people don’t know exactly why, so it’s good to just talk yourself through it a bit. Go through scary scenarios in your head and then ask yourself, “how likely is this to really happen?” and if that doesn’t work, think about ways to avoid that situation and/or resolve it. If that doesn’t work and you need more proof, then go out with a trusted friend and have them leave you alone for short intervals of time, slowly growing larger. :) Eventually, you might not even notice.
