How can I stop my emoticons from disappearing?

I’m using messenger for mac version 7 and all my emoticons have disappeared! Why is this happening? Is there a way I can get them back?

And how do I prevent this from happening again?

Hi!

Which messenger is it? Many times there is a settings menu up at the top of the messaging program. There is often an “Emoticon” option that allows you to turn them on/off.
