Does religion allow you to pick and choose which verses you follow?

I’ve often heard many Christians claim the bible to be the infallible word of ‘God’, however there are some areas they choose not to live by (ie: putting homosexuals to death).

Does this mean they question/morally oppose some of the content in this supposed infallible word of ‘God’? If you do question it, how does the bible retain its credibility as the infallible word of ‘God’? Furthermore, does it make ‘God’ angry for questioning his/her word?

Answer #1

Amblessed, does that mean you would approve of the “stoning of homosexuals” as lex_icon used as her example?

Answer #2

I’m surprised how many people are actually avoiding answering the question.

Answer #3

Because when faced with actual facts that they can’t just answer with dogma, they run away.

Answer #4

ooh fun, lets see how much the bible thumpers really know about their bibles… so versus from the bible…

You shall not wrong a stranger or oppress him - Exodus 22:21

Anyone voted for prop 8? Or are homosexuals subhuman because they’re gay?

Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. - Ephesians 4:29

I suppose you never criticize or gossip?

Give strong drink to him who is perishing, and wine to those in bitter distress - Proverbs 31:6

Well, I guess promoting alcohol is ok?

Nor shall there come upon you a garment of cloth made of two kinds of stuff - Leviticus 19:19

Anyone hear bother to see if their clothes are mixed of different materials?

Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I have come to turn “‘a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law–a man’s enemies will be the members of his own household.’ . - Matthew 10:34

If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father and mother, his wife and children, his brothers and sisters–yes, even his own life–he cannot be my disciple. - Luke 14:26

I suppose you hate your parents?

O daughter of Babylon, you devastated one, how blessed will be the one who repays you With the recompense with which you have repaid us. How blessed will be the one who seizes and dashes your little ones against the rock. - Psalm 137:8-9

Samaria shall become desolate; for she hath rebelled against her God: they shall fall by the sword: their infants shall be dashed in pieces, and their women with child shall be ripped up - Hosea 13:16

Hmm, well, now what can I say about dashing babies brains in?

If a man has a stubborn and rebellious son who does not obey his father and mother and will not listen to them when they discipline him, 19 his father and mother shall take hold of him and bring him to the elders at the gate of his town. 20 They shall say to the elders, “This son of ours is stubborn and rebellious. He will not obey us. He is a profligate and a drunkard.” 21 Then all the men of his town shall stone him to death. You must purge the evil from among you. All Israel will hear of it and be afraid. - Deuteronomy 21:18-21

Anyone killed their kids recently?

rom there Elisha went up to Bethel. As he was walking along the road, some youths came out of the town and jeered at him. “Go on up, you baldhead!” they said. “Go on up, you baldhead!” 24 He turned around, looked at them and called down a curse on them in the name of the LORD. Then two bears came out of the woods and mauled forty-two of the youths. - 2 Kings 2:23-24

Now therefore kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman that hath known man by lying with him.But all the women children, that have not known a man by lying with him, keep alive for yourselves. - Numbers 31: 17

Wow the bible doesnt like kids? They were killed for mocking the guy? And kill all the male babies but keep the women for yourselves? Hmm I guess sex slaves were valuable. Especially virgins.

Ah, now for my fav part, how sexist can the bible get

When a woman has a discharge of blood, which is her regular discharge from her body, she shall be in her impurity for seven days, and whoever touches her shall be unclean until the evening - Leviticus 15:19

I assume you women stay locked up during your periods and do not touch your husbands/boyfriends/fatheres?

But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence. - 1 Timothy 2:12

uhm? ok?

Anyone actually follow all these rules? Or are your kids perfect little angels?

Answer #5

“no where in the Bible does it say to put homosexuals (or any other one who sins) to death. if your Bible says that, then its not the KJV Bible..”

Deuteronomy (King James Version) 22:23 If a damsel that is a virgin be betrothed unto an husband, and a man find her in the city, and lie with her; 22:24 Then ye shall bring them both out unto the gate of that city, and ye shall stone them with stones that they die; the damsel, because she cried not, being in the city; and the man, because he hath humbled his neighbor’s wife: so thou shalt put away evil from among you.

As fas homosexuality goes:

Leviticus (King James Version) 18:22 Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination. 18:23 Neither shalt thou lie with any beast to defile thyself therewith: neither shall any woman stand before a beast to lie down thereto: it is confusion. 18:24 Defile not ye yourselves in any of these things: for in all these the nations are defiled which I cast out before you: 18:25 And the land is defiled: therefore I do visit the iniquity thereof upon it, and the land itself vomiteth out her inhabitants.

…It amazes me how little some of you people know about your own religion…

Answer #6

I am not going to take all the verse that has been misinterpreted here and deal with them because you have pleasure in ridiculing the Bible. So thats it.

…because YOU CAN’T…

Answer #7

How do you know the ones who pick and choose? They are the ones advocating that everyone start reading at John, and particularly John 3:16.

You know, if the Bible contained only John 3:16, it wouldn’t be as aweful as it actually is. The mores of the Bible are as antiquated as the book itself.

Answer #8

“You people are blind and can’t see the truth properly because you have mind blocks. When you look at a verse you can’t see one part of the sentence because your brains are fixed on another part of the sentence that satisfies your need to ridicule the book. You like that part so much that you ignore the rest of the sentence. “

Please give us an example of when we do this? If you can’t, then you are just spouting lies.

Are you denying that the bible says that adulterers and gays deserve death?

Answer #9

I think everyone who follows all verses of their religion are so damn brainwashed. its sad. you could follow any religion you want without worshoping every little thing they say or tell you to do. I think everyone who actually follows a religion is just brainwashed and I feel sorry for them.

Answer #10

So amblessed, are you saying that the proper punishment for adultry is stoning to death? If yes, then you are pretty twisted, if no, then you do in fact pick and choose.

Answer #11

I think the Bible is a group of stories (made of verses/paragraphs), written by men, which have been interpeted by others, in one million ways to “fit” what the reader (or leader) wants it to fit (especially easy, when taken out of context). That’s the beauty of “interpetation”, you can make it what you want…The difference in Christian denominations is nothing more than a diffenence in interpetation of the SAME book…a collection of allegorical stories…You can learn the same lessons from Aeosp’s Fables…which might be a safer bet, considering it would more difficult to take literally.

Answer #12

first no where in the Bible does it say to put homosexuals (or any other one who sins) to death. if your Bible says that, then its not the KJV Bible..”

Your ignorance is ground-breaking…

“If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be PUT TO DEATH. Their blood shall be upon them.” [Leviticus 20:13 - KJV]

Answer #13

So eternallife, you’re admitting that you put homosexuals to death, and think that’s perfectly okay?

Answer #14

Not all christains fallow all of the bible. Like when the bible said homosexuality is punishable by death do we listen to that? No. When the bible says disobeying your rents is punishable by death do we listen to that? No. The bible also says not to kill any one. And that we should love others for who they r. The bible is full of controdictions.

Answer #15

To complete that sentence “because I CAN”T to people like him and the atheists around here.”

Funny… I can explain what Bible verses mean to both Christians AND non-christians (not just atheists); I never have a problem with it. But… YOU can only explain it to someone who already AGREES with you? How pointless… as usual.

You see I can’t take each of these verses that you have used and explain it to you, not because I am incapable of doing it.

You already admitted that YOU CAN’T, which means YOU ARE INCAPABLE. Stop making excuses.

But because you are incapable of understanding it. You people are blind and can’t see the truth properly because you have mind blocks.

…and you can’t make us see the truth (a.k.a your opinions) either, so you’re a failure. You state your opinions, and if people don’t agree with you, they’re blind… right… and THAT’S how you spread the message of Christianity? NO. Like I said before… YOU… AREN’T… CHRISTIAN…

When you look at a verse you can’t see one part of the sentence because your brains are fixed on another part of the sentence that satisfies your need to ridicule the book. You like that part so much that you ignore the rest of the sentence.

Make up all the bullsh*t excuses you want. We expect it from you.

Answer #16

captainassassin got it right. But not fully. He said

This is what I would like to declare. If anyone really and seriously want to know weather the questions raised in this post is valid they can fun mail me and I will answer them.

But I will not discuss in this place because even if one person seriously wants to know the senseless comments other will deceive them.

Coming to the question. Does religion allow you to pick and choose which verses you follow?

Christianity does not allow you to pick and choose verse.

Does this mean they question/morally oppose some of the content in this supposed infallible word of ‘God’? If you do question it, how does the bible retain its credibility as the infallible word of ‘God’?

No Christians do not question or morally oppose any part of the Bible the infallible word of God.

Furthermore, does it make ‘God’ angry for questioning his/her word?

Only ignorant people questions the Bible. God does not become angry with such people would definitely be upset.

Answer #17

ooo…ooo…my hand is up and waving frantically in the air… I know the answer… yes, they pick and choose… ESPECIALLY the fundamentalist christians…

But wait, they are going to use the excuse that christ removed them from old testament rule…

But that won’t wash because…

“Women should be silent in the churches, for they are not permitted to speak, but should be submissive, as the law also says.” (1 Corinthians 14:34)

“Judge for yourselves: Is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head uncovered? Does not even nature itself teach you that if a man has long hair it is a disgrace to him, but that if a woman has long hair, it is her glory? For her hair is given to her as a covering.” (1 Corinthians 11:13-15)

“Slaves, submit yourselves to your masters with all respect, not only to the good and gentle but also to the cruel. “ (1 Peter 2:18)

So, yes they do pick and choose. Yes, they select SOME biblical law to follow, some they ignore…

Hell is going to be mighty crowded…

Answer #18

I am amazed at the nonsense that these ignorant people have posted. Most of you do not see the point that God is trying to make which is typical of you. Then you lack the knowledge of how to look at things in context. Now that clearly shows how much you people hate the Bible and how you have not analyzed with an open mind but looked at it with some crackpot’s view already embedded in you heads.

God made us. He is the master and he make the rules. So he made some rules and assigned some punishments to those who breaks the rules. The point is he wants people to follow those rules. The punishment only shows how serious the rule is. He is interested only in the rules and not in the punishments. When God makes the rules man cannot look into it and decide which one is more serious than the other. Also the punishment is not for those who accedentely breaks the rule. It is for those stubborn nut cases who knows that there is a rule and also knows the punishment he would receive and still goes and does it.

Then there are some who cannot understand what they are reading. For example here is what one posted

*Samaria shall become desolate; for she hath rebelled against her God: they shall fall by the sword: their infants shall be dashed in pieces, and their women with child shall be ripped up - Hosea 13:16

Hmm, well, now what can I say about dashing babies brains in? *

If you are not able to understand this I suggest read it again and again till you understand. Hosea is a book of Prophesy and what this verse is saying is a prophesy. These things are going to happen to them and the Lord is just saying it in advance.

I am not going to take all the verse that has been misinterpreted here and deal with them because you have pleasure in ridiculing the Bible. So thats it.

Answer #19

“God made us. He is the master and he make the rules. So he made some rules and assigned some punishments to those who breaks the rules. The point is he wants people to follow those rules. The punishment only shows how serious the rule is. He is interested only in the rules and not in the punishments.”

The punishments described are very exact. Do you really think that adulterers deserved to be stoned to death? That is what Leviticus 18:22 says. It doesn’t say you may stone them if you want. The rule is, if you commit adultery, you die a horrible death at the hands of your neighbors. Do you agree with that? If you don’t, then you do pick and choose what dogma you will or won’t follow. I do hope you don’t agree with your bible on this one.

Answer #20

Stop defending your book, the entire point of this entire thread (which it is perfectly obvious that you missed) is that people pick and choose which lines they want, and interpret things the way they want. The say homosexuality is bad, but we’re going to ignore the rule about the speaking in church. They say abortion is bad, but ignore the rule to murder your child if he’s being obstinate. I know, it’s not your fault, it’s the way the brain works. We see what we want to see. Since you’re always going to be able to rationalize and deny what you know to be true (because right at this moment you’re trying to justify why the rules you follow are ok, but why the rest are metaphors) there’s no point in trying to change your mind…

Answer #21

“God is patient and long suffering” “slow to anger” The fact that we question doesn’t offend Him. Remember Jesus was considered a rebel and rabble rouser for challenging religious authority. God’s love is unconditional. Scripture says that he loves the sinner (one who falls short of the mark= in other wards we aren’t God), but he hates sin (that which causes separation from His greater hopes for us) It’s a shame when Muslims hang or behead a homosexual. It’s a crime if any religion condones death for what is between the Creator and “the created” I hate that true Christians and followers of Yeshua are lumped together with those who undeservedly would call themselves Christian. I always ask “What did Christ say on the subject?” Act accordingly. As for picking and choosing which verses to live by, I like to hold fast to this one

“For the eyes of the Lord move to and fro throughout the earth that He may strongly support those whose heart is completely His … 2 Chronicles 16:9 ~

Praying for “Revelation Knowledge” before reading any verse, will give one more enlightenment than just trying to read the words. Assistance from the Holy Spirit helps shed light on the scripture and brings the hidden meanings “to light” True Christians “judge not” All blessings to you

Answer #22

first no where in the Bible does it say to put homosexuals (or any other one who sins) to death. if your Bible says that, then its not the KJV Bible. it says its a sin b/c God didnt make it to be man with man or woman with woman. it says nothing about putting them to death. of course it makes God angry if you dont believe it or question it. I mean if you were telling the truth and one didnt believe it, you wouldn be so happy. every single versed is put in there for a reason, not6 for you to pick out one that doesn make you mad or one you dont agree with. the Bible isn just a thing, it is God himself. John 1 explains that. God put his owrd down here to help us with our life and to help bring others to Christ.

Answer #23

If you’re referring to God’s Word, the Bible - NO - as a Christian your inward desire is to please Him in all you do and say, totally - we strive to do so - thus following what He instructs in His inspired, infallible Word given us and not ‘picking and choosing’ parts to obey.
