Satellite mapping is done using various forms of electromagnetic radiation: Radar (RAdio Detection And Ranging) and/or (visible light) photography and/or infra-red imaging etc..

Sonar (SOund NAvigation Ranging) uses a pulsed ultrasonic sound source, and a microphonic transducer to detect the reflected ultrasonic echoes. The time delay is electronically measured with high precision to accurately determine the range (istance) to a solid surface (e.g. shoal of fish sea-bed, submarine etc.).

Sonar cannot be used by a satellite as sound cannot pass through the hard vacuum of outer space.
