College vs. No College

It doesn’t matter if you’ve gone to college or not if you have a really good (and stable) high-paying job, right?

Answer #1

Keep in mind that $25-35k per year sounds like a lot right NOW. But what if you get married, have kids…the bills stack up and you might wish you had a way to get a higher income. A college degree can help with that. Of course, it depends on where your strengths are. If you plan to be a mechanic, then a 4-year university degree would be a waste of time.

Answer #2

I think it’s more a question of the longer-term perspective, and that isn’t always easy to keep in mind when you’re starting out and want to earn an income of your own.

Of course there are well-paid jobs that don’t require college. But most of them tend to be dead-end: you don’t get any higher - in wages, or in the work you do. Imagine being stuck at the same job, no change, no improvement, no variation, for the next 20, 30, 40 years…

It’s not just the money - although a college degree does give you higher wages in general: it’s also the work. When promotion time comes around, it’s usually the ones with college degrees that are first.

True, we’ve all grown up on stories of people who rose to the heights of fame and power, starting with nothing. But let’s face the facts: that was a long time ago, and today a college education has become much more important.

How about a community college or a three-year program, for starters?

Answer #3

I think it depends on the person. Some people do great with out going to college… Some need more direction. College is so expensive these days!! If you’re wanting to be a dr or lawyer- of course you have to go. But college isn’t the only way to guarentee a good job. If you don’t know what your wanting to do in life then you may want to take some basic classes at a community college and get them out of the way in case you do decide to continue. Everyone needs the basic ones. But if you already have the job/career that you want and there is room to grow then I don’t suggest going to school and wasting the money. Everyone has to make the right decision for themselves… There isn’t a blanket answer that fits everyone.

Answer #4

Well, without going to school I can get an entry level job that pays $25-$35 an hour. Is there a point in going to school if I have a good job that I like?

Answer #5

when I think about school, I am aiming for my carrer, not the money.

some jobs out there pay high and dont require school, however, when you have an education, you are able to start in a high career faster than doing it without school
