What classes am I going to have to take in college to become a Criminological Psychologist?

Also classes that could maybe prepare me for this that i can take in high school possibly.

Answer #1

You need to major in psychology and you could then go to grad school (or take specific classes that are offered whilst studying for your degree) to help you develop your specific interests. You need lots of training and quite high levels of qualification for that job- just make sure you study psychology though and you will be fine and can take each further career step as it comes.

Taking science (especially biology), can also be good alongside it, for the forensics side. There is not a lot else you can do in school to prepare, just do some extra curricular things that link into the field by volunteering in relevant places and getting as much experience as possible. As long as you maintain good grades through high school, you will be able to go on to study at college like you need to and follow the career path.

You do not have to major in psychology. In fact, since you’ll need a graduate degree (MA) in Criminological (or “Forensic”) Psychology, I would recommend against making that your undergrad major too. You would be better off majoring in sociology, where you should be able to learn more both about the criminal justice system and about the populations you will likely be working with. Jetc’s suggestion that you do relevant volunteer work is good.

I am curious why you would advise someone against majoring in psychology in their undergrad. For one thing, it helps to get into grad school if you already have a psychology background, schools actually look for that when you’re applying for your masters, and for another, it is extremely difficult to catch up (not impossible, but difficult) because they’re going to assume you already have a background in psychology. Which means you have to do all the leg work on your own. I would know because I spent a lot of time helping out a friend who majored in religion and she didnt know basic terminology and would sit clueless in some of our classes while i was doing my masters

Answer #4

You’d take psychology, anthropology, sociology and criminal justice classes. Oh, and you realize that in order to have a title of psychologist in the U.S. you need a doctorate (a PhD or a PsyD). With a masters you’d have a masters in forensic psychology, you aren’t a psychologist. To get into a masters program, you’d look up the requirements. To get into a PhD program, you’re also going to have to take a few research classes in psychology and a statistics course.
