Why do we categorise music?

do you think it makes the artist feel that if their music is constantly categorised int he same genre/sub genre, they arent reaching out to everyones taste??

Answer #1

For accesibility, organization, and to make things easier. If we didnt, stores that sold cds would be a nightmare, it would be harder to find new artists to listen to of the type of music you like, etc.

Answer #2

How would you find anything? Or find the type of music you like? And an artist cannot reach out to everyone’s taste? That’s not possible. I am not fond of most rap. Why must a rap artist have to reach out for my taste? Lots of people dont like country music, what’s an artist who sings country music going to do about that?

Answer #3

i like trance, and theres loads of sub genres of this, like progressive trance, psytrance etc, why do they feel the need to categorise that? in hmv the closest to trance you get it ‘dance’ and theres all sorts in that section, hardstyle and all

Answer #4

Because if I go into a shop wanting a pop album, I doubt I’ll find it in the metal section. It just makes life a little easier.

Answer #5

I think maybe to figure out what we like. It’s not just categorizing it into country, rap, rock, etc. You have your sad , love songs, party songs, etc that we all put songs into—whether we realize it or not.

Answer #6

For organization.

Answer #7

well, you wouldnt recomend an oprah or jazz cd to a teenage kid who listens to hip hop music would you? no, catagorizing music makes finding it easier, if it wasnt catagorized you would have hundreds of different genres all combined into one, and finding music your into would be like finding a needle in a haystack
