Do you think calligraphy should still be taught to kids in school?

Or is hand-writing not really important with new technology?

Answer #1

I think it is still necessary since PC is not with us all the time. In most cases we still need to use our handwriting. And this I believe also helps the kids with their soft motor that later on will lead them into the art of painting….

Answer #2

I think it is very important, especially for developing motor skills and co-ordination from an early age.

Answer #3

Calligraphy is lettering or handwriting as art. The real question is if there is still value in teaching students cursive or even printing. I taught a college class a few years and though all of my test questions were of the short answer type none of my students wrote in cursive; everyone printed their answers.

I’ve always had sloppy writing and with the advent of computers it has become much worse. A few years ago I decided to get back my cursive. I bought a nice fountain pen and whenever possible I wrote instead of printing or typing. My results have been pretty good; my handwriting is much improved though this is more of a personal challenge than to meet any life need.

Will kids be taught to print and write in the future? I don’t know. When I went to school we learned to use slide rules and learned to do square roots longhand. Neither of these skills are taught to kids now. Penmanship may become quaint and untaught in the future.
