Brand bias with baby equipment?

Would you moms out there rather have a 2nd hand (still clean, good condition) name brand baby equiptment (peg perego, britax, etc.) or new, more generic things (cosco or graco)?

Answer #1

I don’t know… I guess I like the brands you can get now. We have the whole Winnie the Pooh set, stroller, highchair, crib stuff, etc. I think it’s graco, but it might me Cosco. If it’s a set, meets the new requirements and is safe, I’d rather have it than something beautiful that doesn’t meet the safty requirements.

Answer #2

I asked my mom and she said she would only take the second hand stuff if it was from someone she knew.

Answer #3

One thing to be aware of, Meg, if you’re taking good quality second hand stuff, is whether it’s still deemed to meet current safety standards or not. Eg. old cribs where the bars are not close together enough.

Answer #4

I had nearly everything second hand. You do need to be careful that everything meets current safety standards, as others have said, and we bought a new mattress for the cot because that’s recommended. But otherwise I don’t think we bought much new, except one outfit for each boy when they had their Dedication Services at church. I also buy a lot of my own clothes second hand - it’s very environmentally friendly because you’re re-using things instead of having them thrown away. And it’s true that you can sometimes get really good brands for equipment or clothes, which you couldn’t have afforded new.

Answer #5

I’m inclined to agree with Steph’s mum on the second hand stuff coming from someone you know- I mean, it’s all very well someone saying it’s in good condition, but if you know the peron who’s giving it to you, you have an idea what care they take of things.

Mind you, from what I know, baby equipment doesn’t come cheap, and it pays to shop around. So if you can get something good quality in good condition from somebody you know for not a lot of money (or even free) I don’t see why I wouldn’t.
