Alcoholism

Ok, just wondering if I’d be considered an alcoholic. I drink about a 6 pack a day, and on weekends if I start early I can kick a 30 rack myself. don’t really know the last day I went without a drink, but a 6 pack a day isn’t bad right? What you think

This question really depends on how you define “alcoholic,” and even among experts in the field, definitions and diagnosis can vary drastically. Most people would agree, however, that one is an alcoholic when the dependence on alcohol begins to affect one’s job, relationships, and the ability to maintain one’s health and well-being. Alcoholism isn’t simply a measure of how many beers you can drink before you feel sleepy.

The problem with self-diagnosis, of course, is that you’re hardly an objective observer. You could very well be making myriad mistakes in your profession or social life and never be aware of it.

Assuming that everything else in your life is fine, a 6-pack a day does not an alcoholic make. It’s definitely not the healthiest lifestyle, and your waistline is going to start feeling the effects soon enough, but plenty of us lead unhealthy lifestyles, so no one is going to damn you for that unless they’re massive hypocrites.

a lot of people define alcoholic as not having the ability to control how much you have. the amount you are drinking is about 8 - 16 units a day, a male adult shoould only have 14 units in a week, not a day.

it doesn’t HAVE to be affecting your life, a lot of alcoholics still work, parent etc, habitual drinking is a major factor, you know, when it gets to a certain time of te day / evening you normally have one…

I’ve started up a group, it’s new, but the idea of it was so people who think they may have a problem, or family member or even a friend who is drinking to much, then it’s a place for people to get a better understanding of the problem, and maybe people who have stopped drinking give inspiraton. it’s not an alcohol free zone, just trying to help people change their perception of drinking, no matter how scary that might be.

the fact that you have raised the subject indicates that you feel you are loosing control over your drinking…alcoholism is something that people who have never experianced it, will never understand truely how something ‘controllable’ can become out of control.

also, kids who have alcoholic parents need some where to talk and help each other…

really think about your drinking, do you enjoy it anymore? do you want a drink, or do you want to get drunk? there’s a difference…

take care…

when your drinking starts affecting the people around you(wife, parents, husband, siblings, finances, etc) and you cant remember the night before. something bad doesnt have to happen, for you to realize you have a problem. worst letting the cops tell you, you have a problem

and when you try to stop, when you find you can’t or are finding excuses to drink, then your depending on it and it’s you coping mechanism, and excuse ‘oh, had a poop day, so and so was awful’ or ‘ kids have stressed me out today’ or a classic around others… ‘it’d be rude not to!’

Answer #5

It doesnt have to affect your life in order to be considered alcoholism… It’s what you’d call a functioning alcoholic… I’ve got good grades, never miss work, or school, never been arrested, never gotten into trouble, etc etc… still have drinking problems…

Here’s a screening tool, but quite frankly even that isnt the best way to tell. I’ve found one good indicator (unless you dont have close friends or family) is when they start to talk about your drinking… When even one person starts to notice, you know you’ve got a problem…

I would say yes and I would also say yes no matter how old you are 6 cans/bottles a day is extreemely unhealthy and 30 on every weekend is also your body must really have a hard time functioning and not to mention this behaviour is affecting your life span and your fertility if you dont want to quit I would seriously advise you to cut back your intake even 12 a week is a bit too much so try having at least 1 less every week try for 5 a day for a week then 4 a day then 3, ect
