what does the term 'a scarlet letter' mean?
yeah if you read the book a scarlet letter... the town rejects her because her husband was like not in that country or something while she got pregnant and they made her put a scarlet A for "adultery" so everyone in the town knows...so she is an outcast from society and so is her daughter...read the book it's very good :] hope this helped you understand lol.
There was a book written by Nathaniel Hawthorne called "The Scarlet Letter." It's about a woman who commits adultery, and as such she is forced to wear a large, scarlet "A" on her clothes, so people know what she did. In modern times, a scarlet letter is something that identifies anyone as an outcast, most importantly, an outcast to be shunned.
It kinda means that that person is an outcast or has been rejected by society.
