With the many varieties of piercings that have risen to popularity, it's hard to sometimes know all of them. In this guide, we explain what a "Monroe" Piercing is.
The Monroe piercing is similar to cheek piercings in that it is on the face and is considered both a facial piercing and an oral piercing. This type of piercing is done in the area of the upper lip on the left side of the face.
There is, in fact, an origin to this name. When you hear the name "Monroe" we can think back to a celebrity of the past.
That's right! This piercing was created to mimic the beauty mark of Marilyn Monroe.
Aside from it being called this, most famously, its also sometimes referred to as Crayfish, Angel Bite, and Anti Bite
The piercing is usually done using a 14, 16, or 18 gauge labret and the bars of the labret are shortened after the piercing heals.
The Angelbites version of this piercing is where you pierce both sides of the face. Those who get this piercing usually favor a metal ball on the outer-end of the piercing to best represent Monroe’s birthmark.
Getting a Monroe piercing can be quite painful as this area contains a lot of nerves in the inner lip zone. On the pain scale it is about 4/10.
Despite the pain, it is, however, one of the fastest areas to heal. Healing time can be anywhere from 6 to 12 weeks, though most people find that it heals in just about 6 weeks.
When doing this sort of piercing, it should be noted that it is highly suggested for this to be done by professionals. If this piercing is done incorrectly, it can leave long-term damage to the gums and teeth if done incorrectly.
So always try to seek a professional piercer when doing these sorts of delicate piercings.
For typical, normal "Monroe" Piercing, it can range from $25-$80 in any renowned piercing parlor. The jewelry for the piercings though can go from a few bucks to hundreds of dollars depending on whether its high end or average.
