fly is symolic,as in the expression 'high'to mean under the influence,witches were often depicted for mixing couldrons of potions,it was believed that the broomsticks were used to apply the drugs thus created,to alludethat pratise,they were depicted artistically as stradding and thus ridding the broomstick instead of shown stradding it in other ways
