In general, white eggs are laid by chickens with white ear tufts and brown eggs are laid by chickens with red feathers and ear tufts. There is a particular breed that lays blue eggs although their ears are not blue- so go figure.

Xxjulixx is right. Different breeds of chickens lay eggs with different colored shells. It has little to do with what the hens eat.

The eggshell color comes from a pigment that is part of the overall genetic make-up of the hen that lays the egg. While you can't necessarily predict the color of the eggshell by the color of the feathers, there is an connection in the color of the earlobes. Hens with white earlobes lay white eggs. Hens red earlobes lay brown eggs.
