There's nothing wrong with it. It's not gross at all. It's just another form of body modification. Piercings, like tattoos, are art forms. As long as their done professional and are properly cared for... there's nothing wrong with them. If you want it - get it. Don't worry about what others will think, it's your body so you can do with it as you please.

splitting the tounge is just another body modification
its not for everyone
theres a very high chance that the tounge will reattatch itself withing the first year
doing so will deform it a bit, and it wont look exactly the same as it did before
but for some people, its just another body modification
another way to express yourself
like a peircing or tattoo or other body modification like scarring, ect

I actually think sewing up your crack,while quite unhealthy for biological reasons is far more stupider than splitting your tounge.

dated a guy once with that and I was quite intresting kissing him xD
