What to do for my dog after her surgery...

Asked by annonomus 10 months ago, 7 answers.

Alright, as a lot of you may know from reading my previous questions, my dog recently had to have surgery. Well now I've got another question concerning her. She hasn't ate in 5 days. She wasn't eating before we took her to the vet which is why we took...

her. Now she's STILL not eating. My question is, how long can a dog go without eating before they die of starvation?
And what are some things we might want to try to get her to eat? We've tired different stuff like, can food, hamburger, hotdogs, etc...
But she just won't touch it. She turns her head away. She DOES drink water... a lot. But we're worried since she still isn't eating.
If anyone can help me here, I'd apperciate it greatly.

So this is the old dog that the doctor did not want to do surgery on her Pyometra but then did?
I would call the vet. Our hospital has a drug that will stimulate an appeitite. I would see if the doctor could prescribe something. Sometimes the anastesia makes them feel yucky and they won't eat for a couple of days, but 5 days would also have me worried, you need to contact the doctor.

It would take quite a while for a dog to actually starve to death...maybe 3 weeks...If it were my dog, I'd try some boiled white rice with hamberger...it's a soft diet, easily digested, and easy on the gut. I use instant Minute rice, and throw the hamberger into the water before it starts to boil...then when it does boil, throw the rice in, and pull it off the stove like the directions say. She may not want to eat yet (she was pretty sick, and the surgery was what? Two days ago?)...but at least you can keep it in the refer, and keep offering it until she does want to eat.

I'm so glad she made it!!! happy

Yes this is the same, old dog. The first vet was wrong, she didn't actally have pyometra. She probably doesn't have cancer either. The other vet called it an infection. He did the surgery and wants us to call him tomorrow to fill him in on how she's doing. I think we'll ask him about her eating then. Thank you very much for the help though.

Did she just have mastitis? Inflammation on the breast caused by infection.

They said she was pregnant. We had no clue about that since we've never seen her out of the yard recently. They found 1 puppy which was already dead. The did a C section to remove it. I think the infection was caused by the milk.

Yes, you are right, So they spayed her and just removed the pups.
or they did a real c-section and mom and the litter is fine?
