Election Issue: Illegal immigration should be a concern to all American citizens in this election year. After all, unless the tide is stemmed, it will deprive taxpayers of enormous, hard-earned benefits in years to come - What solution would you offer...

That is untrue. Since at least 99.9% of illegal immigrants pay taxes as well, they seem to be paying for no reason, since they can not recieve social security, being illegal. Besides, what American really wants to bus tables for minimum wage?

There are two possible simple solutions:

- let them come legally
- deprive them of benefits if they are illegal.

Neither of these are generally palatable, and the authoritarian 'crack down' solution will be ineffective except to turn the US into a police state.

A third approach, would be to work with the Mexican government to provide universal education and economic reform, so as to remove the incentive to come to the US. That's politically impossible.

People will still be hand wringing about what to do in regards to illegal immigration 50 years from now.
