what kind of guitar strings and pickups will produce a blend of old fashioned rock and roll sound with a little grunge sound?

I like ernie ball strings...or get a grunge/distortion pedlle [like 40 bucks :/]

I'd try Jazz strings, or any heavier-gauged pure-nickle set, really.

pick-ups DO matter

I'd go with maybe a Fender Jaguar or Telecaster for old fashion rock

I'm not real educated on pickups for that style but im sure the stock ones would be fine.

as for strings, I use Ernie Ball Super Slinky
