That's a hard question to answer in a general way. Obviously, proponents of the one camp (whichever one) will tend to think their approach to medicine is the best one. I think a lot depends on what your problem is.

But speaking in general, this is what I'd say:

Alternative medicine approaches (and there are many) are often especially well suited for long-term or chronic problems - chronic pain, for example. The treatments and medicines they go in for tend to be more gentle and slow-working, which is not something for those who want a quick fix. However, alternative medicine can succeed in cases where conventional medicine hasn't been able to offer much relief. (I've had excellent experience with acupuncture and back/hip pain, for instance.) A basic idea of most alternative medicine approaches is to treat the entire patient, body and soul, and not just specific problems.

Conventional or regular Western medicine can vary from practitioner to practitioner, but in general the focus has tended to be more on treating the specific symptoms - frequently with quick-acting medicines that may have other side-effects..Conventional medicine can be invaluable in emergency cases, treating injuries, etc., but often longer-term problems seem to need a deeper approach.

Ideally it should be possible to combine the insights of both approaches, and some conventional practitioners have begun to realize this - but there's still a long way to go..

I'm with susila2 on this, there are times when alternative medicine is helpful... like chronic back pain etc...

I do, however, think it should be used after regular medicine has failed, and never in serious cases... My grandfather was diagnosed by a witch doctor (sorry, but as far as I'm concerned that's what he is, his official titles is probaby holistic practitioner), as lacking will power because he was showing signs of dementia. Turns out he had had a stroke that went undiagnosed for several weeks because of this quack... I think people need to stick to what they know and not pretend to be able to cure stuff they cant... And the problem with these alternative medicine doctors, is most of them arent doctors, they have no clue what they're talking about, and there's no one overseeing them and regulating them to make sure they dont kill anyone!
