I belive that people got it from eating monkeys.

The most likely origin of HIV is the Simian Immunodeficiency Virus. Recently a version of the SIV was found in chimpanzees that is very similar to the HIV-1 virus. The SIV crossed species at some point, possibly through hunters eating monkeys.
