We are all going to die on wednesday

Asked by curiousmuch about 1 year ago, 13 answers.

Have you herd the stupid swiss want to create a time lapse and want to see when the universe will end by smashing protons together?! I know its a very small chance but we could all get sucked into cern's black hole and then as of wednesday we are gone...

forever, is it worth it at all just to time travel stupid people shouldnt take their life for granted I want to live im 15 and I finally know what I want in life and I dont want that taken away now , 2 legal teams have failed to stop them why god why?! The swiss nvr sided with countries in war was that their plan to get us to trust them now I cant believe they are putting 6+ billon lives at stake I hope the russians nuke emthats what I heard they want to do they could have warned us they were gonan kill us years ago not a week ago :'( I really hope I wake up on thursday but theres a chance we wont and it scares me to know I'll die at school and not with my family, I have my whole life ahead of me its not fair to take that away

There was siginificant enough research and evidence, not to mention safety precautions, to prove that the experiment can be done safely.

If the governments were really that worried, it would be stopped

No need to panic: 1) only God knows when things will take place 2) God is in control - He forgets NOT, His own.

actually its not if you watch the news they are smashing protons together to see if it has mass and how long it takes for the mass to retract in comparison they could figure out how long the universe will last or they could kill us all whats the point why do they have to figure out everything cant they be happy?! anyway I was thinking since they smash atoms all the time and nothing has gone wrong and atoms have protons so what damage could just a part of an atom do heh heh sad

yeah god can you prove he's real, hwo can they make it safe can they stop it before a black hole forms? ,something which the naked eye cant see and if it does form thats it we are screwed if we dont die instantly we have a year

Scientists have ALREADY created black holes in labs.
Nothing bad happened.

They aren't doing anything with time travel. They're just smashing particles together with the kind of force that happens every day when particles ejected from the Sun hit our atmosphere. If these collisions would create stable black holes, the Earth would have been destroyed ages ago.

well if this is true the world is not going to blow and they've done it before etc... , then why the hell are people so sure the world is going to blow up? Like it scared the hell out of me at school when I first heard it.

This wednesday, they're not doing anything that hasn't been done hundreds of times before in other particle accelerators. They probably won't fire it up to 'full power' until some time next year.

And when they do, no, it won't cause the end of the world, universe, or anything else. The stupid people who created it are the same nuclear physicists best placed to assess what it'll do, and they've established it's safe.

I don't know exact dates, but it's been going on for the past few years.
If you're curious about it, look it up.

Black holes have not been created 'in the lab'. From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Hole#Production_in_high_energy_collisions :

to date, no such events have ever been detected either directly or indirectly as a deficiency of the mass balance in particle accelerator experiments

Some braneworld scenarios for example put the Planck mass much lower, may be even as low as 1 TeV.[citation needed] This would make it possible for micro black holes to be created in the high energy collisions occurring when cosmic rays hit the earth's atmosphere, or even maybe in new Large Hadron Collider at CERN. These theories are however very speculative, and the creation of black holes in these processes is deemed unlikely by many specialists.

Note that even if it could create such a black hole (highly unlikely, and if it could, it would be happening in our atmosphere all the time), the black hole would 'evaporate' almost immediately.
