This could be 'three' if you are using the 'third word in the question' bit.
It could be 'I am hungry' if you are using the 'three words that end in -gry' bit.
It could be 'energy' if you are using the 'words that end in 'g-r-y' bit.
There are so many versions of this riddle out there, it's nearly impossible to solve at this point with just one answer because chances are, the asker is thinking of another version.
Here is the GRY riddle in it's original form going back 20 years. Look at it and remember that there are parts of this riddle that want to throw you off the path. Try to solve it, or at least understand it before heading off to the final explanation:
'Think of words ending in -GRY. Angry and hungry are two of them. There are only three words in the English language. What is the third word? The word is something that everyone uses every day. If you have listened carefully, I have already told you what it is.'
In its original form, the first two sentences have absolutely 'nothing' to do with the question: 'Think of words ending in -GRY. Angry and hungry are two of them.' Ignore those two sentences. They are there only to throw you off. (Worked, didn't it?)
What's left is the actual riddle itself: 'There are only three words in the English language. What is the third word? The word is something that everyone uses every day. If you have listened carefully, I have already told you what it is.'
The key is the phrase 'the English language.' In this three-word phrase, the third word is simply the word 'language.' 'Language' is definitely something that 'everyone uses every day'! Without that quirky little twist, the puzzle would just be another trivia question, and not a riddle.
Remember, the thing about riddles is, you must follow them to the letter or they just don't work. The GRY riddle has gotten so screwed up over the years, it's turned into somewhat of a hoax or a funky joke. Funky?
sheesh um language maybe! that's hard
Yay, so I got it right. Right? I hope so!
Yes, it's language! I had to post such a huge comment on this one for a certain somebodies answer. I'm sure he knows who he is.
hmm, makes no sense to me, maybe I think 2 much about these things...
I don't get it? language hasn't got a GRY in in, and it's pronounced lan-gw-idge...
The heck? I wasn't even being mean that time!
No, I guess you were'nt. But you have been so mean to me in the past, I figured you were just being a smart a*s. I never received your apology.
S'because you blocked me! :D It was a good one, too. There was culpability and everything.
So I'm going to assume, even though I never do that, that you apologized, and I accept. If you don't agree with my advice from now on, just don't be a smart a*s about it.

Try this! it's supposed to be really hard
'Think of words ending in -GRY. Angry and hungry are two of them. There are only three words in the English language. What is the third word? The word is something that everyone uses every day. If you have listened carefully, I have already told you what it is.'
