Toilet training for toddler - boy being very stubborn.

dhooni Asked by dhooni over 3 years ago, 6 answers.

Three year old knows how to pee in the toilet and does so on his own very well but won't have a bowel movement on the toilet. Every day he soils his underwear... Any ideas?

Thing is to be firm and committed to your plan of action - your son needs to understand that both activities are ok on the toilet. Sometimes, children rebel with their bowel movements, and refuse to potty train or have accidents as a result of being stubborn about this particular issue.

The best advice is to keep your son happy and excited about going, and feeling comfortable with the whole process. If he feels like he's in control, he'll go in the toilet of his own accord. Best of luck to you.

my sisters little boy had the same problem, her idea was to take him shopping with her and let him choose his own underwear. he was so pleased with his choice he didnt want to soil them. hope this might help!

If he isnt ready don't force it or it will take more time. Some kids just progress faster.

Bowel movements just take longer than the other. It's so normal. Just give him some time. If it is taking way longer than you think, and you don't want to have to do tons of laundry every day, he might need to be wearing pullups for a while.

Don't punish the kid. I have a seriously stubborn almost 3 year old girl, who is not interested in toilet training at all (she was until she realised that unlike the other kids at craiche, she's not allowed to use the hand dryer or the paper towel to dry her hands - she has a severe skin condition).

My advice would be to wait until he is ready. Maybe leave him in pull-ups for now, or ignore the fact that he is soiling?
maybe he's doing it for attention, or maybe he can't control it as yet.
No one knows your son better than you.. have you tried asking him why he can't do it in the toilet? Maybe he knows the solution happy
