Sweden leading the way for an oil free world

favorite girl Asked by piker187 about 1 year ago, 5 answers.

this is awsome. Sweden is leading the revolution on breaking oil dependency. I was doing some research today and found that sweden is trying to break off all oil dependency in the next 15 years, without a new generation of nuclear power stations. they...

have a population of around 9 million people so it is possible. Sweden now gets almost all its electricity from nuclear and hydroelectric power, and relies on fossil fuels mainly for transport. Almost all its heating has been converted in the past decade to schemes which distribute steam or hot water generated by geothermal energy or waste heat. I personally think thats great IF THEY CAN PULL IT OFF. what are your opinions, why arn't the U.S and other countries doing the same thing before oil cripples our economy. is it even possible to do it on a much larger scale like in the U.S. with a population 300 times greater and much much larger. I seriously hope it goes well so that other countries will follow there example before its to late. lol, 20 years from now global economies will collapse and the swedish will rule the world, lol.

Sweden rocks.
I did a bit of research on swedens recyling systems. They are amazing. If anyone can break their oil dependancy its sweden.
as to why other countries dont follow suit, I really dont know.
Take ireland fr example. We have a perfect west coast with constant currents being driven from the atlantic drift, which are IDEAL for use in hydro electric power generation... but are we utilising it??? NO..

If we all followed swedens lead we would be much better off. the oil wont last forever.

my point exactly, I was reading how the U.K has really good wind and tides to create power, but NOOO, lets not use it. Sweden has given me the best news I've heard of in years, it gives me hope that the world isn't doomed. I just hope other countries start converting as soon as possible, it would take a lot longer than 15 years to convert the U.S if we started today I believe we have hit the peak oil mark or are about to, so 15 years from now if nothing is done immediatly, its going to be very rough living. why the hell arn't we doing anything about this. the oil problem has allready slapped us in the face, are we waiting for it to kick us in the balls next until action is taken.

As it stands right now, the US hardly uses oil anymore to generate electrical power. About 20% of our electricity already comes from nuclear power, and about 50% comes from coal-fired plants. We actually use more renewable energy to produce electrical power now than we use oil.

Just like Sweden, it's the transport sector of our economy that guzzles most of the oil. And seeing how we're 20 times their size with 30 times their population, weaning our transport sector completely from oil is understandably going to take more time.

By the way, Iceland has already been getting almost all of their electrical power from geothermal energy for years now, and has planned for a while to be oil free by 2025.

Unfortunately, a lot of alternative energy sources just don't make economic sense until oil hits $200/barrel and stays there.

Although this would not be popular, I think a punitive gas tax, with the funds earmarked for developing and deploying clean energy sources, is the right approach. Such a tax would also force lifestyle changes that conserve; smaller vehicles, living closer to work, etc.

If we hit peak oil without significant viable alternatives available, it's going to be a very painful 10 or so years while the entire economy focuses on solving the problem, which would leave us dangerously vulnerable to a better prepared foreign adversary. This is a national security issue that none of the politicians are willing to face.
