Dear Teachers and Fellow Classmates,
Have you ever met a child who is allowed to do whatever they want,...
whenever they want? If so, be careful what you wish for because parents are very caring and look out for the best. And neglect is one of the different forms of abuse.
Kids who get avoided by their parents consider themselves lucky because they can do whatever they want, mostly teenagers. But, it’s not as great as they might think. When they are neglected they don’t always learn proper hygiene, don’t always get fed, they don’t learn politeness, and they are likely to get involved in drugs and alcohol.
One of the reasons that the parents may be neglecting is because they don’t think that they can stand up to the child or they just don’t care for the child. According to the National Clearinghouse of Family Violence, kids under the age of 3 are most likely to get investigated for abuse and teenagers are most likely to get investigated for neglect. Preschoolers and infants are at greater risks of abuse for the simple reason that they are young and innocent and don’t know yet the difference between what is wrong and what is right.
On their side, kids that are neglected and need affection often want to tell adults about their problems but they fear that they won’t believe them or want to help them. They may also be afraid of what will happen. Parents that neglect their children often warn them of the consequences that will follow if they do end up telling anyone. They also often convince the children that the neglect that they get is the child’s own fault and that they will only get in more trouble if they do end up telling anyone.
Parents should be thoughtful and think about all the consequences of their actions, in most cases the child in question will have a hard time their whole life through with socializing and their success in life. They are the ones who should make their kids want to choose a good path for their life.
Sometimes people think that neglect is a private family matter. But it’s not. It’s not right and these kids have their rights to be treated fairly. If anyone has any suspicion that a child is being beaten or neglected they should report their concern immediately to the child welfare agency, provincial or territorial social services department or police force in your community. If necessary a report can be made anonymously.
Now, Is neglect something you would want as a child?
