We had a senegal parrot at one stage, they get along with almost anyone and make excellent pets. We eventually gave ours away to a friend who wanted a pet and it adapted beautifully to the new environment. Really sweet animals and a great choice for your wife.
Another parrot that I like is the cockatoo. They have very sweet personalities and are family parrots (other than african greys who tend to favour one person).
Also here is a link that explains a bit more about their personalities.

you think that I have a good idea, and will the established bird get along peacefully with the newcomer? (supervised, of course!)
