Ok well my mom is a Democrat and my dad is a Republican, most people pick whatever their parents had chose, but I really don't know what to do, I have been to all kinds of republican dinners, because my family is in office locally so I don't know which I should pick?

Hi,

I have a second degree in Political Science so I could tell you pretty much anything you want to know. I think the main thing is to DECIDE FOR YOURSELF which of the two sides you believe in. Asking on forums like this will often give you very biased answers. I'm going to list what each of the two parties believe in, and then you should pick for yourself based on which you agree with more.

(Also, there are gray areas in everything...these are severe generalizations).

Democrats:
Generally support welfare programs (aiding the poor, food stamps, etc.)
Believe in strong gun control (restrictions on buying guns)
Oppose the death penalty
Believe in the women's right to choose an abortion
Separation of church and state (religion should not be in politics)
Internationally, support aid to other countries and do not support the War (generally)
Support equality/gay civil unions and gay rights

Republicans:
Do not support welfare programs- believe people should work for their money
Do not believe in gun control- believe owning a gun is a person's right
In favor of the death penalty
Believe abortion is wrong
Supportive of the War on Terror (although many have lost support for it lately)...

There is a strong religious wing of Republicans who believe that prayer in schools is OK, gay people are sinners, etc.

Hope that helps...

Heh, I come from a conservative Republican family (thought they are staunchly for seperation of church and state).

Liberal and Democrat were dirty words growing up. Unfortunately for my parents they also taught me to think for myself. For many years I called myself Republican even tough I really didn't fit.

My first issue was capital punishment. It didn't make any sense to me to kill people to demonstrate killing was wrong. Sociologists also generally say it isn't a deterant for crime so it serves no purpose except revenge which the government shouldn't be a party to IMHO.

Next I spent a whole year debating health and energy policy in high school. After many hours of research I found myself in favor of socialized medicine and nationalising energy.

Then in college I didn't pick a roommate and I got placed on the gay wing. After living with gays and befriending several I discovered I didn't have anything against them so all the Republlican/Moral Majority anti-gay rhetoric bothered me. Seeing high achieving women in college made me a feminist as well.

I still considered myself a Republican even though I was against almost everythign they stood for.

I had a fling with libertarianism ans while I still agree with some of their positions the kind of society they want is unworkable so I started to call myself Independant.

After a dozen years of always voting Democrat I realized that indeed I was a Democrat and that there was nothing wrong with being a Democrat or a liberal.

I think you should be a registered Independent ... it will show that you don't follow any party platform or group... that you think for yourself.

Most of the problems with the two party system is that we get to blame one party for every issue, and nothing gets solved. There are good Republicans and good Democrats, but it is best to be a good American. Know the Constitution and get involved as a citizen. Citizenship is about participation, not following a group of people. Be a Leader, we have to many followers.

im a rupublican and hulagirl90 is a (censored) she obviously doesnt know what republicans think believe it or not most of the people I know are republicans and none of them are obsesed aboutg money like she says and we dont LIKE to go to war we need to be at war right now and the demorcrats think that we need to pull our men out of iraq, dont get me wrong I want them out of there but what do you think would happen if everyone was out of iraq wed get attacked by terrorist, besides the soldiers knew what they signed up for war isnt all fun and games its tough but with them there our friends and family are safe her. another thing she says that demorcrats care about the world...and hey im not saying they dont but democrats only say they care about the world because the idiot Al Gore came up with the idea of glodal warming that really isnt going on, but anyways the dems. believe anything that theyre told even if its 100% wrong...do a experiment fill up a glass with half water and half ice-cubes and leave it overnight at room temp. and mark were the water is on the cup and the next morning look at the cup...the water didnt rise it went down so if so called 'global warming' is occuring what do you think would happen when the glaciers melt...water wont rise itll go down so that proves that you have nothing to worry about, anyways scientist have proven that global warming isnt occuring yet demorcrats still believe its occuring so because the republicans dont believe in global warming we must not care about the word well lemme tell you thats bull. So look into the two parties, and I guess all im saying is that I think the republican party is better.
