the difference between drinking water and a sports drink such as gatorade is that the sports drink rehydrates you faster. In the body there is fluid inside the cells (intracellular) and fluid outside the cells (extracellular) and the concentration of the fluids in the two compartments is the same. If one has a higher concentration, water will move to the other one to balance it so if you drink a sports drink with electrolytes, the water will move into your cells faster to balance the two concentations. Hope that made sense! As for the effect on pulse, im not too sure. It possibly lowers the cardiac output as your body would have to work less to pump the blood around the body.
