I just found this on my search engine - it gives a strong Christian arguement against cigarette production:

World Vision International Statement for WHO’s Public Hearings on the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control - October 12-13, 2000, Geneva

Some churches say that anything that harms your body is destroying God’s sacred temple (your body). A lot of churches take different views on it.(or no view at all). Wesleyan is another church that has an oppositions to tobacco(as well as dancing)

“The” church? Which one? I know some churches are against tobacco. The Seventh-Day Adventists Church is rather famous for their opposition to tobacco. Many other churches have no official position on this subject.

It dosen’t affect your salvation, but, it can sure ruin your health. God is still in the miracle working business, because he delivered me from cigs. when he came into my life, in 1985. I think it is a matter of grace, if churches dictated to people what they could or could not do, that would be legalism, most of them leave it up to the individual and God. When one gets serious, they can be delivered, and then, they can know the glory of the statement in the bible,

WHOM THE SON SETS FREE, IS FREE INDEED !!!

Thank you Lord, for your wonder working power…

Part of your question can be answered by the Biblical case against the damage we do to our own bodies, in this case by smoking. That’s what people have answered well, above.

But the question is specifically about tobacco production, which involves farmers and a huge industry, not just individual smokers. I’ll try to answer that part of the question:

I Googled the phrase - Christians against tobacco production - and came up with a site looking at the ethics of the industry within a faith-based understanding - Muslim as well as Christain and Jewish (I think). It seemed to be pretty anti!

There were also some sites looking at how Christians are opposing the exploitation of tobacco farmers in poorer countries. That might be relevant too.

So I suggest that you type my phrase (or a smiliar one) into your favourite search engine and see if you can find the same sites.

I’m glad you posted this question! Too often we’re like ostriches, hiding our heads from things that seem unpleasant and too complicated.

The Bible indicates:

God considers the human body His sacred Temple. The literal, flesh and blood bodies of people have been considered the Temple of God since the Holy Spirit came to dwell within believers, in Jesus Christ, at Pentecost (Acts, chapter 2).

Even nonbelievers are, potentially, the Temple of God. He is against anything that defiles (or harms) His Temple. He loves His creation called man, and has gone to great lengths–particularly in giving Old Testament Law–to instruct in what should and should not be consumed by the flesh body.

We know of the deadly effects that smoking has on the body. Many of us have lost friends and/or relatives who smoked throughout their lives. This generation, more than any other that came before, is responsible for using restraint in using things that will harm the body, because of the great strides in vast amounts of research information that warns us about such things. God’s Word says:

1 Corinthians 3:17: “If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which [temple] ye are.”

1 Corinthians 6:19: “What? Know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost [which is] in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?”
