What's the most populated city in the world?

what is the most in the populated city world?

I did a couple of searches on Google. The answer I got most was Seoul, South Korea. Population approximately being 10,321,449.

from recently published history books, I've read it is moscow, russia. the population on record is currently over 12 million.

I always thought it was moscow,
I cant seem to find any sites that agree on what city it is...

Very intriguing... I did a bit of digging, and here is what I found - there is no definitive answer.

The last (and first) Russian Census was in 2002, and Moscow's population was slated as being 10,126,424 (as taken from the Russian Census Website, and not including Zelenograd) - that didn't take into account the millions of illegal immigrants living in Moscow though, so the real figure is higher, but not known, so you can't say for sure how big it is. Next Census is supposed to be in 2010.

According to the Seoul Metropolitan Government website, the population of Seoul is 10,356,202 as at 2006. From what I've read about the growth of Moscow, the official populations could be about neck-and-neck right about now.

However, it depends how you define 'City' . For instance, if you include Zelenograd for Moscow, it beats Seoul. The United Nations for instance see Tokyo as being the worlds largest city (26.4 Million, by including more of the surrounding urban areas), while other sources peg Mumbai as being the largest. If I was doing an assignment, I would either refer to the most up to date text book I could find and reference it, or do similar with a website.

According to Wikkipedia, Beijing's population exceeds 17.4million.

Its not really about population as it is about density. Beijing does have five million more people but Tokyo has 12 million people crammed into a smaller space, Tokyo is the city that has the greatest number of people per square kilometer (5796 /km²)
