Convicted felon (no prison time) needs a job

Asked by myboyboy about 1 year ago, 10 answers.

I live in royse city, texas. in august 2006 I was convicted of poss of controlled substance less than a gram. the only thing on my background check is this, a state jail felony. I'm doing the right thing, changed my life, have new friends, go to...

church taking care of my family (3 beautiful daughters). prior to my charge, for twenty years, I've been a tx licensed property casualty general lines insurane agent. I'm ready to start a new career and I've been offered 4 great jobs... my resume letter gets the call for an interview. my interviews are successful! then here it comes... before you can start we need to do a background check!! I was offered 2 jobs today... pending this check. during neither of the interviews did I complete an applicatin nor did they ask. after reading my resume (long job tenure, positions held, ect.) meeting me then naturally assume I would have nothing on my record. what do I do? I need a job! the last 3 job offers had to decline because of my felony. does anyone have any advice? what's the best way to handle this situation? do any other felons have good jobs? if so where? I don't know what to do!

It is sad how felons who are trying to change their lives find it so hard. I can just say keep hope alive and dont be afraid to walk before you run. You may have to suck it up and take a bs job in the mean time while you look for a better paying job.
But like I said keep hope alive and never give up.

I understand your frustration. I also have 2 felonies from over 20 years ago. Since then I have been married, raised 3 great children had been employed. Now with the present economy I was laid off and each time my interviews go well and then when I go to explain my convictions I can see something change in the employers eyes as if they are silently saying we cant hire you. My convictions were for burglary 2nd. I did my time and I would think that after being clean for over 20 years, that would count in my favor. there needs to be some sort of law against this. I fell it is straight out discrimination.

I am on probation for 5 years for a 2degree assault and felonious restraint [domestic]. I was a nurse for 20 years. Since my probation has started, it has ben very hard to find a job doing anything. Since it is a violent crime. I feel just because a person comments a crime the system should not make so hard for a person to maintain a honest living. I have worked al my life, never stole , or broke into anyone's home, earned everything that I have through hard work. But because of a mishap my life has come to a stop. This is the reason people become repeat offenders, ther's nothing out here for us.

What you all should do is start calling washington. If a lot of people make a big fuss about this situation I'm pretty for sure they may do somthing about it. If we all just sit around then we don't want anything to be done.I have faith that you all will find somthing.Like the other man said keep your head up.Try to get your record expunged, and everything will work out.Pray a whole lot.Somthing's gotta give.Even though I don't have a felony I feel your pain.My man has enough for all of us and he can't find a job but I have faith so I won't complain.PRAYYY

It may be best to take what you can get until you pass the time frames required for expungement. Then you can have your old job back.

Since I was convicted of an assault 3 and other driving convictions I have had the opportunity to take advantage of all the great joys a criminal conviction has to offer. Not only am I able to do all of the things I always wanted to do, I get to enjoy my youth while everyone else slaves away for that rationing device necessary to survive.
Without these convictions I would have never attended college. Many of my questions would have gone unanswered and if I had it all to do over again I would not change a thing.

I have a good job but the factory I work for is a union shop. I don't have enough seniority to stay so I've been laid off for about a year. I decided to update my resume and pass them out. I have great qualification and I had an interview and passed with flying colors. Was offered the job but had to go thru temp agency making $10.00 an hour which was ok because I just need to get in the door. Well the temp service won't hire me because I have two felonies that are about ten years old. It's frustrating when I was willing to take a pay cut and get a bs job and still can't get a job. No matter what your sentence is, people who improve and walk the straight line will always have a life sentence. FRUSTRATED MAN

I'm trying to research this issue on the net. I too have a felony from 10yrs ago. I decided to go back to school since employers are relunctant to hire me once I mention up front I have this felony. I did read on the net that in New York a felon can get a Certificate of Relief From Disabilities which is supposed to help employers see the individual is worth hiring, I'm checking to see if Oklahoma recognizes this certificate. You might try to goole for more info

To some this might help, I heard they had a thing called a federal bond which is a letter from the unemployment office that states that they will be liaible for up 100,000 dollars if something goes wrong at the job and they prove that you did it. I can also be renewed after a year. But you have to be offered the job first if you have a felony. check with your local unemployment office. GOD BLESS!
