It is a person who expects that most things will have negative results, so I would say that you are right. It doesn’t mean that they are always negative, but if any given action has a possible bad outcome, a pessimist expects that outcome.

A pessimist doesn’t always have to be a negative person. They just usually expect the worst out of any give situation. This can lead many people to have a very negative out look on life. But I have met some people that seem to be rather pessimistic, but are still happy people. When something good comes along, they are pleasantly surprised because they were expecting the worst.
