Any religion which expects loyalty to something other than the state is likely to be oppressed. And a totalitarian state is most likely to be oppressive! So Christians were persecuted by Nero, Jews were persecuted in Europe, several religions are persecuted today in China, Burma etc - if the state demands your only allegiance but you reserve your greatest respect and honour for a different authority then you will be oppressed.
It's hard for me, looking at that big picture, to see that any particular religion is oppressed in our current Western society. All our nations recognise that citizens may have varied allegiances to political or religious groups, and all give us varying degrees of rights to freedom of worship and expression. None of us is jailed or attacked by state representatives because of our faith.
It is important for religious believers to live our lives of faith humbly and openly, without courting so-called 'oppression' by demanding rights which are not ours in a democratic and mixed society.
hmm...I think jews and jehovahs witnesses..people treat them both like crap, make fun of them for their beleifs when they dont even know what their beleivng in or what religion their going to..my respects to everybody..I dont mean to offend anyone..but to my point of view thats what I see. but at a certain point other religions have been oppressed as well..
I don't care which country.
Then...well, they all are
Even atheism if you start researching enough. There are countries where to be a citizen you have to be the religion of the country...so, every other religion, from the perspective of those citizens, is oppressed, including aetheism.
Similar, you have countries where all religions are banned - not just one or two, but all of them - eg, officially, you're not allowed to have *any* religion other than aetheism.
...so, why is it that we all can't get a long? I think this short summary explains a great deal...most folks simply don't have the capacity to understand that any human culture has the same intrinsic value as any other. And, while it may sound foreign but religion is part parcel of the culture of the country in which you live, or are a citizen of.
I think that jehovah's witnesses are the most oppressed because they exclude themselves from other religions but I think that they are really great people because they don't smoke, get drunk, do any sort of drugs and they don't support the army because they say that in the bible it says to try to live in peace so since they don't do these things people will go against them.
Judaism.
I don't feel sorry for Jehova's Witlesses. They ask for it.
If you want to get technical, all religions are oppressed. Humankind is so diverse now, that it really doesn't matter what you are, everyone feels the need to stand up for their religious beliefs.
Whatever happened to believing and being happy with it?
Oh yea. Holy text tells many to shove their beliefs down others' throats. Forgot that part.
Any religion is opressed, to be honest. But I'm forced to stand up for my own beliefs everyday as a witch. I know that ALL Wiccans/Pagans/etc. I've communicated with have felt this same discrimination at one point or another. We're often associated with a group of people who've done things I'd never do! Yet, I've done nothing other than believe something that people fear.
It makes me sad that we all can't coexist. I see religion as something that's interpreted in several different ways, but we're all worshiping the same thing in the end! Wicca is just my way of going about it.
Yes, a lot of religions are severely oppressed, but I have to agree that Wicca/Paganism has to be at least in the top five, along with some others. The reason I say Wicca though is because I too have dealt with a lot problems that Wiccans still do face in this modern era, problems that other religions like Jews or Jehovah's Witnesses do not have to deal with.
Like discrimination, stereotyping, inferred ideas, and more. If you don't believe me, just look it up. People ask me, So, do you pray?
My answer: Yeah, don't you?
And that's not hating on atheists or those who are agnostic or those who don't often have time for praying in their daily hectic lives, but seriously.
Ask yourself. What do I know is true about witchcraft?
And maybe that'll give you all the answers that you need.
Happy Hunting! ~.^
