Reminds me of a previous discussion I was in.
As many of you know I don't believe in any kind of god. I also don't believe we have a soul.
At one point someone offered to buy my soul. I told him that since I didn't believe I had a soul selling it to him would be fraud. He agreed and asked if he could change the wording showing that he would own any soul that I am in possession of. I agreed that that verbiage freed me from defrauding him since I made no claims to having a soul. Since there is potentially some value for someone who believes in souls owning someone else's I asked if I could sell it more than once or would he have exclusive ownership. Seems to me that I should be able to sell something imaginary as often as I want. He disagreed and said that the contract would have to indicate that he was sole owner of any soul I may or many not have. I told him that if this is something I can only sell once I'll have to see what other people are willing to pay before accepting his offer. At that point he told me that this was getting too complicated and he lost interest in my soul.
Would I claim to belong to a particular religion for money? If there was enough money I suppose I would. To ease my conscience I'd make big donations to Amnesty International, ACLU, and Planned Parenthood.
This question reminds me of that old joke. A man offers a woman a million dollars if she would sleep with him. She considers it and accepts. He then offers her ten dollars for the same thing, and she gets all huffy, and shoots back, What do you think I am? He responds, We've already established what you are. Now we're just negotiating the price.
If you would change your religion for money, it cannot mean much to you. I would like to think that my soul, my hope of life, my fidelity to all I believe, is not for sale.
