New at 7-11, sign that says that credit card fraud is a felony?

Jeremy Goodrich yep, that's me Asked by thedude 7 months ago, 9 answers.

The local 7-11 near my house now has a sign printed in black white that reads, credit card fraud is a felony...let me get this straight: the politicians of our country decided that if somebody commits a crime that hurts *nobody* they should be...

imprisoned, lose a bunch of their rights (right to vote, etc) stop paying taxes instead, start using up MY tax dollars and yours?

I'm sorry, wouldn't it make more sense to give them a hefty fine? Force them to pick up trash, do community service, volunteer at a homeless shelter? Exactly how is giving these people a felony conviction serving the greater good for society?

Yeah do you? Answered by pwincess_irenemarie on Mar 30, 2009, 04:07PM

Exactly!
I think the same thing.
Jail time isnt going to do anything.
They would just sit there without any worries,
I think they should go out do community service AND pay a mighty fine.
I doubt someone is going to learn from sitting in jail.

Hardly any punishments ever fit the crime.

I agree. sitting in jail will teach them nothing. they should have to pay back the cardholder and also give them extra for the trouble they have caused them. then pay a large fine to the state followed by many apone many hours of community service.

Credit card fraud is victimless?? I guess I'm lost on that part...

Tho I do wonder about the waste of time, effort and ink to make a sign for it...how many crooks are gonna read it, and take heed??

Simple: if you submit a form with your credit card company, you get your money back (I've had my card number ripped off locally, as has my wife had that happen).

The law limits a consumer's liability...so, they don't pay if it was fraud.

So if *I* don't foot the bill, and the bank gets the money *back* from the merchant, yep, the merchant is out *money* but they didn't lose any rights. I'm not saying it's right...but, given the number of privately owned prisons...you have to wonder, how is putting these people in jail taking our tax money to make the private corporations that own the prisons wealthy...how is *this* serving the greater good of society?

Credit card fraud is tied with identity theft and grand theft (because generally, people spend/steal money that equals more $400+, which is a felony).

Does it make sense to create felony charges when people can declare fraudulent charges and be reimbursed? Nah, but when does the justice system ever function properly.

Well, then how 'bout making them crush rocks for asphalt, or something a little harder, with longer memory impact, than picking up trash, or dishing out soup at a shelter. Around here they use the kids in Juvie for that easy community duty...

They're thieves. Credit card fraud is not a victimless crime, it's a crime that touches everyone just a little bit - like counterfieting. Prices are higher, and credit card interest rates are higher because of it.

The 7-11 near where I live, has a computerized system in the credit card swipe, that immediately contacts the fraud department of the bank issuing any credit card used by anyone at the store. The consumer is automatically contacted by telephone and must call the fraud dept to verify every charge. I thought there was a problem with my credit card, until I used a different one and the same thing happened. Although it's good to be protected against fraud, I find this system difficult and it's no longer convenient to shop at 7-11.
