You need to keep her on her leach for the first while - till shes really used to it. When we first got my dog she used to book it out the door and run away and it would take hours to find her. After having her for years shes used to her surroundings and we can take her places without her leach.

Dogs learn in stages...so she must first leart to walk beside you with a leash...and learn basic obedience...sit...down...stay...heel...Repetition, and consitant training...THEN, start using the long line (25' nylon rope) in the back yard or a place where there aren't any distractions. Work with her on heeling and just dragging the rope behind her...this way she'll forget about it, but you can still control her if you need to.

It's all about time...it takes lots of it to train a dog to be trustworthy off the leash.
