My cat just isn't losing the weight

Please help me...I have a cat who will be 7 october 30. He is 18 pounds and really needs to lose some weight. I've been doing everything the vet told me to do, lesser portions of food (which he doesnt even eat all of it), only 3 tiny little temtations brand treats a day, and he is doing well with actually sticking to his diet, but he hasnt lost a pound! Please, if anyone has ever dieted their cat, help. Its been months! The vet said he will die early if I dont diet him soon!

Is he an indoor cat? It would be best to let him roam outside in the day, and yes okay, the diet he's sticking too, but those treats could have a lot more fat-inducing stuff in them than his food.
When I dieted my cat, I just let her out all the time for exercise and gave her meals first thing in a morning and last thing at night, with nothing in between (unless she found food on her travels lol) and she lost the weight in no time!
Hmm...if your cat is already doing all these things and still not losing weight, I'd say he had an underactive thyroid, which causes animals to bloat and stay fat no matter how much exercise they do, but generally they start to lose fur with that as well. Just a matter of medication sorts it though.

Poor pussycat!
I have a big cat too, and although I love him to death, I'm always scared he isn't healthy.

Food isn't the only component in loosing weight, exercise is very important too. Invest in a 'mouse-on-a-string' style toy, or just regular string, and play with him in your spare time. He's only 7, so he's likely to still want to play, even if he's a little unsure at first. He'll enjoy it and so will you!

Make sure he's not a six-dinner syd, and none of your neighbours or guests are slipping him titbits.

Ask you vet to double check that your pussycat doesn't have a health condition which is making him overweight, and if there is a particularly successful diet cat food you could feed him. It may be expensive, but it would definitely be worth it in the long run.

Brushing him aids good circulation, and though this may not encourage fat loss it will ensure his coat is healthy.

But there's only so much you can do, so don't blame yourself if he isn't loosing the weight, you sound like you love him very much be patient and don't ever give up on him, he needs you!

I wish him all the best, let us know how he gets on!
x

Your cat should be allowed to roam outside.
If you have clipped his claws then you can't let him leave your sight!!! He can't defend himself if he does get into a fight.
Just let him roam around in the backyard. You'll be surprised how much weight he will loose.
You can also try feeding him whiskers dry food. I don't know weather you get it in America??? It's dry biscuits that come in a big bag. Anyway There are different types Adault, kitten etc. There is also a weight loss one!
Remember your not being kind feeding your cat too much. You shouldn't have difficulty feeling his/her ribs.
Good Luck!!

I kicked my cat out for pissing on clothes, she lost weight in no time at all. But now that I brought her back in, she's back up to 20 lbs. She does nothing but eat, sleep, and poop. So, kick him or her out, that'll do the trick.
