How can I motivate and inspire myself to begin doing my art again?

How do I get myself back into my art? I used to do a ton of art as a hobby painting, sketching, digital art etc. I stopped for a long time and I don’t know how to get back into it. I can’t seem to find the motivation or inspiration. I used to be good at it but my skills are lacking now due to the long break and I really want it back. How can I motivate or inspire myself.

Answer #1

The only thing that can get me up and do something is if there is a goal in mind. So if you really want to do this, set out reasonable goals and promise yourself to meet them.

I dont know that you really can, for me, I have to wait for the inspiration to come to me, then I’ll get very into and something great will come from it, but as of right now, I have the same problem, I just cant seem to find a subject I want to paint on, or even something I want to write about, it sucks.

I have a similar situation, except with writing. I know the feeling – it’s like you want so badly to get into it again, but the motivation is just not there. First, I don’t think that the internet is a good source of inspiration because it’s so easy to procrastinate and lose your creative drive. I think something that really helps is getting out of the house. I live near a metro, so sometimes I’ll go on it by myself. It can actually be really relaxing to just sit there and watch people (I do this a lot haha), while listening to my iPod. I would definitely recommend just finding somewhere you could go to give yourself time to think. You never know where a good idea might come from. You could go to some store that has an art section and just look through everything. Or a museum? You could go on a bike ride. Hmm… you could try to relax at your house (or outside your house) while listening to some good music. Start scribbling something small to begin with; just eyes or whatever comes to mind.

Finding your motivation is basically finding what gives you the meaning and the drive back to wanting to do it again. Some ideas off the top of my head…..How about volunteering your artistic time to a senor center or childrens hospital ward. Share your time and talents with those who would love to learn what you know about art. Or draw Great Aunt Rosie who may have never had a portrait of herself done and would love for someone to do one for her. If you love animals, go to an animal shelter and offer to sketch pets for their walls…(just maybe some potential owners might want those pics to take home with their pet? Do some local searches for drawing contests that might get you motivated in drawing local scenery. I found the best motivation if you have a talent is the reason you have it to begin with….to share it and use it to make a difference for some person, place, or thing.
