Take them to a dry-cleaner. The moth balls probably saved the coat from the horrible little wool eating bugs, but a dry cleaner can usually get the smell out or at least they can be honest with you about where you stand on the situation.

How can I get mothball smell out of coats?

three years ago I purchased three of the same woollen coats which came wrapped in plastic. I noticed that they smelled like mothballs.
over the years, I have soaked them in fabric softner and aired them for months and dry cleaned them as well, but the smell is still there.
can you help?
