I've been playing for years. There are two bits of advice that I can share:
1- Start out learning theory over just reading notes. Build on rock, blues, and jazz. You won't regret it. If your instructor is unable to provide you that then get a different teacher. It DOES matter!!
2- Practice Allot! It takes allot of time to make your brain and hands work together. You'll have to go over little tid-bits and runs over and over again.
As time goes on you'll see progress. If you learn in the classical fashion then it will take years before you're any good at it. IF you learn from a jazz artist then it happen very quickly. Since you already can read music then it won't take along at all... unless you don't practice.
