Is Possum fur animal cruelty?

I bought these gloves, but then I figured out they were possum fur. Is that animal cruelty? ‘because I’m really against animal cruelty.

Answer #1

Oh course and possum gloves are really gimpy. Very what do you call it “redneck” by wearing fur your promoting animal suffering and stupid senselessness. Yeah you might not like my opinion but oh well. You can ignore me and play with your dead possum hands just remember those animals once lived and breathed and felt cold and hungry just like any other being.

Answer #2

It is not animal cruelty if they are killed humanely. I shoot them around where I live because they eat the native trees and wild life. I am their only predator and why waste a great resorce. Eat them, wear them, just stop them from destroying New Zealand. It is no more cruel than having a steak for dinner or wearing leather shoes, perhaps even less because it has been free range all its life.

Answer #3

uhm I would think so since they killed&skinned a possum so you could have stupid gloves.

We are involved in the possum industry in New Zealand. We buy possum fur skins and bodies. This means very little is wasted. They are an introduced pest that live in very high numbers compared with there native country Austrilia. They eat leafs untill they kill a tree, they have been known to eat native birds eggs, they eat native insects and they compete with native birds nest sites. They have no preditors in New Zealand. The goverment uses 90% of the worlds 1080 production by bait carrols with it and using planes and helicopters to spread it. 1080 is the worlds most toxic poison it looks and tastes like water and there is no antidote aproimately one teaspoon will kill 500 people.

Answer #7

It is animal cruelty not to buy possum fur. Ask any New Zealander about the possum (different than the American possum–same name, different animal). It is taking over the country and threatening native species of animals. The gov’t kills them using a poison. Possum used for your gloves aren’t killed with the gov’t poison–they are killed humanely. So you are doing a good thing by buying the gloves. It is all over the news these days.

I suppose it’d depend on how the animal was killed…do they have “possum farms”?? If it was in a hunt…that’d be a different matter.

macgregor and pat55, thnx.

Answer #14

it all depends on your opinion of animal cruelty. a lot of animals are killed just for there fur. but nowdays, a lot of things are made out of fur, and leather, ect. belts, shoes, jackets, gloves, jewelry even…lots of things. did you buy them new or secondhand? because a lot of new mass produced things would be consideres animal cruelty. because they need the animals to make them. but second hand things have allready been made, perhaps even 100 years ago, there not going to make those things again, so id say if you like animals but want to wear some things made out of them. buy second hand.
