It isnt actually blue... it's just a darker shade of red... veins look blue because of the skin and light reflection
and actually the blood returning to the veins has oxygen in it (just a lower amount)

The book is only partly right. The reason why blood is red is because of the hemoglobin in red blood cells -- and if I remember rightly, hemoglobin is responsible for carrying oxygen throughout your body. After your blood has absorbed oxygen from the lungs and and begins traveling through your body through your arteries, your blood is not blue but red. However, the cells in your body gradually deplete the amount of oxygen contained in your blood because oxygen's one of the primary things which they need in order to function -- and gradually, your blood begins to turn blue. The reason why the veins under your skin look blue is because they're carrying the depleted blood back towards your lungs so that they can absorb more oxygen and start the whole process again -- but even veinous blood will still look red when it leaves your body because of oxygen in the air. At least, that's how it works as far as I can remember...

First thing: Blood is *never* blue. Blood is described as dark red (venous) or bright red (arterial). Our veins look blue because we are looking at them *through* our skin. The blood inside them is dark red and it doesn't reflect light very well. The blood you see when you get hurt is usually venous blood. Arterial blood comes out in spurts. It spurts every time the heart beats. I hope you never see that. - Said by Mr. D http://www.globalclassroom.org/blublud.html hope this helps you
