For the first question try holding down the middle button and pause until it shuts off. If that does not work take it to a ipod fix-it place. I am sorry but I don't know the answer to your second quesion.

I think the best way is to clear all your former operating records. So you can reset or make a firmware updating for your iPod.
you can go to the official iPod website to update your firmware to its latest edition. However, before updating your iPod's firmware you have to make a backup for your iPod's data if they are useful.
you can make it and all you need is a three party utility which I recommend Aniosoft ibackup. It enables you to transfer iPod's music and other content to any storage device and iTunes as well. And both the backup in the storage device can be recovered and restored with no any change and no any risk. And the data in the iTunes is quite in accord with the iPod's data including its playlists, rating and etc.
So in your case, you can make a music transfer from your iPod to the iTunes in your computer with this tool and also make a backup for the ipod's content somewhere in your computer as well. Then reset or make a firmware updating for your iPod.
There is a note that needs your attention, you have to turn off the auto sync of the iTunes before you can make this transfer.
for your convenience,I'll add the links here:

good luck to you.
