From the sales people, the older PS3 consoles do play PS2 games, however, some of them don't sad So make sure you ask when you buy it if that particular PS3 console can play the PS2 games.

Only some version of the PS3 have backwards compatibilaity ( Play PS2 games) I think those version that do are the 40 and 60GB Not sure about the 20gb But I knwo for a fact that the newest PS3 80gb will not play ps2 games. I made the mistake of buying one when my ps2 died from static shock, and then found out they took out the chip that lets you play PS2 games on it! T_T
