How to tell if a uncut diamond is real?

I have some uncut diamonds but I don't know how to test to see if they are real without spending money getting them valued or cut and polished.

First, see if the stone will scratch glass. Diamond is the hardest mineral there is so all diamonds will scratch glass.
Every jewelry store in the country has a small handheld tester that tests for true diamonds. Find one who will let you check a few stones. Then you will know whether to front the money to get them evaluated.
