How to put songs on an ipod

Ok I recieved an ipod nano as a gift awhile ago and havent a clue how to put songs on there.
Like I tried just the normal way plugging it in through the usb port in my computer and dragging and dropping into the ipod folder that came up
But that didnt...

work
Ipods are so damn complicated
Like how the hell do they work?!

And do I need itunes
And if so is it free
And everytime I download a song do I have to pay
Or can I download songs from like limewire and just put it in itunes and sync it or watever
I have no idea about ipods

The easiest way to go is to download iTunes. You can download it for free though a disc should have come with your iPod.

If you have mp3s iTunes can import them and put them on your iPod when you sync it. You can also rip songs from any CDs you own and put them on your iPod as well.
