youcan contact the patent office at u.s. patent office.com or united states government depending on what you what to patent I would say safely a minimum of may be 500.00 and it goes up from there. Also you might want to check with the library of congress in washington d.c.

You can get a provisional patent for a year for $200 by the end of which time you need to file a real patent.

The total cost, if you use a really good law firm, can be ~30K or so, however, there are cheaper law firms, etc...when we were looking at filing one for my other business, the company we talked to worked with Intel Google for patent litigation, so they were at the high end of the price range.

Good thing about getting a provisional patent is you get the date as when you file the provisional, not the later date.
