How do you lighten black hair?

I have medium brown hair naturally..and decided I wanted to go darker, to a dark dark brown. To make a long story short my wishes were not properly conveyed to my mother in law, who used to teach at a local hairdressing college..and I ended up with very...

black hair on top where it processed longer than the bottom. THe underside of my hair is the color that I would like the rest to be. How can I lighten my hair just a few shades so that it looks better with my skin tone? Would highlights make it looks lighter and more suitable for my skin, as well as less damaging?

You'll have to let it fade or bleach it and color it the color you want.

u have to bleach it and then do the color you want it to be!!!
